Dental/Dental Hygienist

Universal Precautions

This course covers the implementation of universal precautions, originally recommended by the Centers for Disease Control in the 1980s, as an approach to infection control. It focuses on protecting healthcare workers from HIV, HBV, and other bloodborne pathogens in human blood and certain body fluids, regardless of a patient’s infection status. The course emphasizes four main universal precautions: hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, respiratory hygiene, and sharps safety. It provides detailed guidelines for each precaution, including proper handwashing techniques, the use of PPE such as gloves, goggles, and aprons, and the safe handling and disposal of sharps. Additionally, the course covers respiratory hygiene practices to prevent the transmission of respiratory infections, and the proper management of biomedical waste. Participants will learn how to protect themselves and decrease the transmission of bloodborne pathogens in the work environment by following these precautions and guidelines.

This course will award 1 continuing education hour.  Please see the board approval box for course approval information.
